Financial Landscapes is a series of works that explore the possibilities of rendering financial data as a landscape. These imaginary environments, rendered in both the virtual and physical world, invite the viewer to experience the behavior of the stock market as a generative terrain.
The initial piece in this series renders the thirty stocks on the Dow Jones Industrial Average as it currently stands. The pieces visualize a twelve year sample of historical stock data, from 2000-2012, and render price over time along the flat plane, while daily volume of shares traded gives the terrain its height. The video animation is a study for an installation in which real-time stock data would introduce different weather patterns into the environment, further altering its landscape.
The sculptures in this series were made using three-dimensional software and printing techniques. The logos of each company are imprinted on its tile, allowing the topography to distort the recognizable brands.
